Root Canals
What is a Root Canal?
If infection has reached the tooth nerve, a root canal is required. A root canal includes cleaning out an infected tooth's root, then filling and sealing it.
Do I Need a Root Canal?
Leaving an infection untreated might cause it to grow in size. Root canal infection occurs when infected pulp of a tooth has penetrated to the pulp chamber, where it can lead to an abscess and subsequent pain and swelling around it. The removal of an abscess is necessary to stop the pain and reverse infection.
Root Canal Procedure:
- The pulp chamber is accessed through a hole in the crown of the tooth.
- Removal of the pulp is followed by shaping and cleaning of the root canals.
- The infected region is treated with medication.
- The root canals are closed off with filler material.
- The crown opening is sealed.
