Knocked-Out Tooth?

Knocked-Out Tooth?
Here’s What to Do Before You Get to the Dentist

When a tooth gets knocked out, every second counts. Follow these steps from Santa Clara Dental to increase the chances of saving it:

  • Handle with care: Pick up the tooth by the crown (top), not the root.
  • Rinse gently: If dirty, lightly rinse with milk or contact lens solution. Don’t scrub or wipe it off—this could damage vital root cells.
  • Keep it moist: Drop the tooth in a glass of milk, saliva, or—if nothing else—water. No milk? Tuck it between your cheek and gum (unless you're a young child—then use a container).
  • Young child tip: If the child may swallow the tooth, don’t place it in their mouth. Use a cup with milk or saliva instead.
  • Try reinserting it: If you're able, gently slip the tooth back into its socket—only if it goes easily and the direction is correct. Don't force it.

Then, get to our office immediately. Quick action can be the difference between saving or losing the tooth!
